Honing and superfinishing stones are highly specialized, precision tools that are specifically developed and manufactured by Atlantic GmbH for the respective application. Honing/finishing refers to a machining process in which the finest surfaces and precisely defined structures are produced as a result of continuous contact between the workpiece and honing stone.

The honing and superfinishing stones are produced by bonding abrasive, synthetic grinding media. Vitrified bonds are mostly used for the bonding process, however, resin-bonded stones can also be used in exceptional cases. The bond holds the abrasive grain in place until it is blunted, after which it is released. A new sharp grain is then used (self-sharpening effect).

A distinction is made between conventional grinding media, such as aluminium oxide and silicon carbide, on one hand, and ultra-hard materials, such as cubic boron nitride (CBN) and synthetically produced diamond on the other.

In principle, a honing stone consists of the abrasive grain, the bond and pores. It can also be impregnated with either sulphur or wax to extend its tool life.
